St. Anthony's will be pitching in to clean up our community. Sometime between April 23-30, students will venture out into the community to pick up litter.
Green Fair- Earth day As part of our Earth Day celebrations the St. Anthony's Green Team applied for a Speak Up grant and were ecstatic to earn $1,000 towards an event. Students decided to plan a "Green Fair" to take place just before Earth Day on Friday, April 20th. The entire day will be devoted to Green events (recycling relay, craft from recycled materials, guest speaker(s), a Green Fair where eco-friendly exhibitors from the community can set up booths in the school gym for students and members from the community to come visit), and so much more!
On Friday, November 4 at 1:30 pm Victoria and Corrina Serda from the "Climate Reality Project" spoke with students about climate change and what we can do to change our habits to reduce our overall impact. Students were very engaged in the presentation and gained a lot of valuable information about what they can do to help.
Take it home Tuesdays
In an effort to increase awareness among parents of how much garbage in being produced from school lunches each Tuesday at St. Anthony's is "Take it home Tuesday" where students participate in a boomerang lunch meaning all lunch waste that they bring to school returns home with them.
Waste Free Wednesdays
In an effort to keep the Waste Free Lunch iniative up all year long, each Wednesday at St. Anthony's is "Waste Free Wednesday". The golden garbage can as well as 10 green points will be awarded weekly to the class with the least garbage on Wednesday.
October 17-21 is Waste Free Reduction Week in Canada. In support of this initiative St. Anthony's participated in Waste Free Lunch Week. The golden garbage can and 10 green points were awarded daily to the classroom with the least garbage. Overall, the week was a great success and a great deal of garbage was diverted from the landfill. Classes were able to gain valuable knowledge about how to carefully sort as well as how to reduce their classroom garbage.
St. Anthony's (grade 5-8) is participating in the Great Canadian Shoreline Clean-up Tuesday, September 20. We will be cleaning various locations along the Penetangore river.
FOLLOW-UP Our clean-up was a great success. Together we filled 8 garbage bags and 4 recycling bags with discarded items. The combined weight of the trash was over 400 lbs! The trails and shoreline near the Penetangore river are now a safer place for plants and wildlife.
Students from the grade 5/6 classes at St. Anthony's were so concerned with the amount of waste that they found along the Penetangore River and tributaries that they decided to clean along different portions of the river on a monthly basis in the fall and spring.
